Teacher Appreciation Week

Think about all of the hours that teachers put in. All of the hard work that they do, just to improve their students education. They made it their job to better the next generation of young people. To brighten their minds, and help them get a better future. Hiteon students realized this and made a whole week just to appreciate all that the teachers here do for us. We had a different theme each day. On one day it was bring candy, on a different day students brought a flower to their teachers, on another it was wear your teacher’s favorite color. The teachers here do more than enough to deserve this, they go above and beyond the expectations for their students. One thing that my teacher currently, and even teachers past make me think of is that ‘We may not remember everything that you said, but we will remember how special you made us feel.’

Teachers are the people who believe in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. They can, and sometimes are, be taken for granted. Teacher appreciation week lets teachers feel like they matter, and that no one could do as good as a job as them. Every class in Hiteon does this for their one of a kind teacher. Every teacher needs to be appreciated, because they chose to do this. Look back to when you were in school, or what you have done to appreciate the teachers that you had, even if you were taught at home. If you are in school, appreciate your teachers, then, maybe just then, they might start to appreciate you. ~Sophia

Seedfolk: A Novel Study Through Art

My fifth grade year has been very marvelous, but one thing has given me a beautiful amount of learning. A unit called Seedfolks ,in this unit we read a book called Seedfolks. Each day we learned about a new character and a different ways  art can express symbolism. For example, on the first day we learned about a girl named Kim and how different lines can mean different things. Each piece of art is unique and has symbolism.

In the book we also read about hardships some of the characters had and how we can express that through art. By using different colors we can erupt different feelings. Such as blue can make you sad or red can make you feel anger. This unit has taught my class about symbolism.  This learning is very useful because most people can not see symbolism in art but we can see that and now we can look at things very different.

Fun Run Blast Off

My fifth grade classroom just finished the fun run on April 14th, 2016.  It was really fun and hard work!  We had it in the gymnasium, a little a ways from my classroom.  It was 15 minutes long and it was tiring at the end!  The bright side was, that it was healthy and exercised our bodies.
We had the fun run in the morning.  Before we ran, some moms came into our classroom to prepare us.  They gave us ribbon to tie onto our wrists, different people had different colors.  My color was orange.  They also gave us a bib with a number printed on it, to pin to our shirts.  After they did that, we went into the music room to stretch.  Finally, we were ready to run a full 15 minutes!  Our P.E. teacher counted down from 3, then we ran.  Finally, our time was over and we walked with our hands on our heads.  I found out that I got 53 laps!  I was proud of myself, because I beat my goal, it was 50 laps.

The fun run was really fun and healthy for our bodies, it keeps us really active.  It was okay for us to be tired at the end, that means our bodies worked hard!  It was important for us to warm up and cool down so our muscles did not get tight, we even got otter pops and water after we ran.  It was important for us to right away have water.  That way, it would cool down and loosen our bodies.  Too bad it was my last year as a fifth grader, because it was my last year to run!  Overall I think the fun run is valuable to our bodies and gets us moving, instead of sitting down a lot of the day!      ~Madeline

Pennies for Patients

Pennies for patients is a program where you raise money. Why it’s called pennies for patients is because every little bit counts. The fundraiser helps kids that have leukemia and lymphoma. Everyone can make a difference. You get a box that can hold all the money you bring for the fundraiser. You can put pennies, quarters, dimes, and nickels. You can also put cash and checks, and pay online.
A few years ago Hiteon raised over seventy thousand dollars!💵 We were able to help kids all around the world. We were only able to raise that much money because everyone did their part. This year if one classroom raises $700 then the class that raised the money gets a pizza party.🎉 I really hope we reach our goal and help more kids around the world.🌎

Probe Research Writing

In our class we are doing probes. A probe is where you research about something (we researched about garbage) and you write about it. The probe has to have: a picture or graph, a border, and you have to color it. We made our border by using a ruler📏 and putting it on the edge of the paper. For the picture you cannot print one out, you have to draw it so the probe is all kid made.
Also for the probe you have to have an interesting title so people will want to read📖 it when the walk through the halls. The probe has to have at least 20 sentences including facts if you are doing facts. You can get creative on your border but it has to be related to your topic. Also you have to make sure that the information you typed is correct. We had a lot of fun doing the probes. Here are some examples-

Journal Making with the Artist!

Last week we had an artist in our room to help with learning about art and color. She also had us make field journals. They are little and hand made. The artist gave us tools to help us. It is made from paper, a stick, a magazine page, and a dictionary page. It was very fun to make.
First we cut all the paper into halves. Then we folded them into halves all together. We took a whole puncher and punched both of the sides. We strung a piece of string thru both sides. Then we got a stick and wrapped the string around the stick and tied it for the spine of it. I wanted to do something different with mine so I put a pocket in mine. Also, I put a map of made up places for fun. This was an easy activity to do and now I have a fun little journal to write in.
